Agilent 6540 UDH Accurate-Mass QTOF LC/MS

The Agilent 6540 QTOF LC/MS allows screening the complete mixture of compounds. Due to high mass resolution (40,000 at m/z = 1000) in the range 50-3200 amu, each detected compound can be assigned to a specific chemical formula with high degree of certainty which is calculated by the data processing software. Once an unknown compound is identified, the instrument can also be used to perform tandem mass spectrometry and obtain structural information.

Applications:

  • Identification of unknown disinfection by-products in water treatment
  • Identification of compounds responsible for positive bioassays (estrogenicity, androgenicity, cytotoxicity, genotoxicity)
  • Comparison of sample fingerprint such as treated vs. untreated water.

 


Agilent 6460 LC-MS/MS

The Agilent LC-QQQ 6460 is a very sensitive instruments providing very low detection limits (ng/L in water sample or femtogram-level on column) for a wide range of compounds. Therefore, it is extensively used to perform analysis of trace organic contaminants for both research and routine activities. The instrument is also coupled to an online trace enrichment module and can perform low ng/L quantification without any extraction

  • Accurate identification and quantitation of trace contaminants (including pharmaceuticals, personal care products, steroid hormones, perfluorinated compounds, pesticides, artificial sweeteners and others)
  • Structural identification (MS/MS analysis) of chemicals previously identified with the QTOF
  • Alternative to GC-MS analysis for non-volatile compounds (no derivatization required)

 


Agilent 6490 LC MS/MS

The newest generation of Agilent's LC triple quadrupole mass spectrometer offers a 10-100 times increase in sensitivity in analysis of organic contaminants compared to previous models. This allows for direct injection and analysis at nanogram/liter levels of emerging organic contaminants in wastewater in the Snyder Lab. Current projects also include low level analysis of drug metabolites in Urine, Bile and Liver of Diabetic patients.

 

 


Agilent 7000 GC-MS/MS

Top

 

The GC triple quad is used to measure the concentration of volatile organic compounds.  It can be operated in Chemical Ionization (CI) or Electron Impact (EI) mode. Using the NIST database in EI mode unknown volatile organic compounds can be identified by running the instrument in SCAN mode.  If the mass transitions have been identified the detection limit of the instrument can be improved by running multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) mode to select for the parent and daughter ions.  Specific applications in our lab include:

 

  • Quantification of Nitrosamines including NDMA in water samples.
  • Quantification of various disinfection by-products
  • Measurement of diaxane in environmental samples

 

 


Agilent LC-FLD/DAD

The lab includes an Agilent LC with a fluorescence detector coupled with a Diode array detector. The LC is an infinity series 1290 which allows a maximum column temperature of 1200 bar. The instrument is used in to detect compounds that have known fluorophores and produce fluorescence. The DAD measures UV light emitted at 8 different wavelengths. The specific uses in the lab include:

 

  • Measurement and quantification of alkylphenols in drinking and wastewater.
  • Quantification of PAH’s in environmental samples.
  • Size exclusion chromatography

 

 


Agilent 7700x ICP-MS

The Agilent 7700x ICP-MS allows quantifying inorganic contaminants in environmental matrices with three different modes of sample introduction: 1) a standard ALS for the batch analysis of liquid samples, 2) 7890 GC for the chromatographic separation of volatile analytes prior to ICPMS analysis, and 3) 1260 bio-inert LC for the separation of non-volatile analytes. 

Applications: 

  • Cr (VI)/Cr (III) speciation in environmental water samples
  • Speciation and quantification of iodinated and brominated organic disinfection byproducts in water
  • 11B/10B isotope ratio studies in river water samples
  • Quantification of rare earth elements in seawater & brine samples

 

 


Agilent GC-ECD/FID

The Agilent 7890A GC-ECD/FID is equipped with electrochemical and flame-ionized detectors. It is used for the detection of volatile organic compounds potentially reluctant to mass spectrometry analysis.

Applications:

  • Detection and Quantification of  halogenated compounds including THMs and PCBs with Electron Capture Detecor (ECD)
  • Detection and Quantification of volatile compounds like TCE and 1,4-dioxane through Flame Ionization Detector (FID)

Horiba Aqualog is a UV-Vis/Fluorescence spectrophotometer providing fast scan speed. This device is used to analyze dissolved organic matter (DOM) including natural organic matter (NOM) and effluent organic matter (EfOM) from wastewater treatment plants both quantitatively and qualitatively.

 


Shimadzu TOC Analyzer

The Shimadzu TOC-TN achieves total combustion of samples by heating them to 680°C in an oxygen-rich environment inside TC combustion tubes filled with a platinum catalyst to estimate carbon 720 °C catalytic thermal decomposition/chemiluminescence methods for TN measurement. The ability to switch between a normal sensitivity and high sensitivity catalyst permits an accurate measurement ranging from 4 ug/L to 30,000 mg/L.

The autotrace performs automatic solid phase extraction of liquid samples. It automates cartridge conditioning, sample loading and elution of six samples at a time allowing high throughput work. ITT Wedeco Ozone Generator

The ITT/Wedeco laboratory scale ozone generator will create an ozone stock solution of at least 50 mg/L in water chilled down to 1 degrees Celsius using ethylene glycol (green liquid). Ozone is used as an oxidant for the removal of chemicals of emerging concern, oxidizing organic matter, and testing for the formation of disinfection byproducts (DBPs).  

 

 

 


ITT Wedeco Collimated Beam

The ITT/Wedeco low-pressure collimated beam is used to test advanced oxidation processes or disinfection studies using ultraviolet light at a constant wavelength of 254 nm. The amount of time underneath the UV beam is used to calculate the overall dose.  This apparatus can be used for bench studies or as a way to validate UV exposure for flow through systems such as the sensor lab or the AOP pilot.

 

 


ITT WEDECO Modular 8HC Ozone Generator
